Lake Chelan: where geology, climate, and elevation converge

The Lake Chelan appellation is one of Washington's most distinctive growing regions—a glacially-carved valley where ancient geology meets a temperate microclimate. This is not a place chosen by accident. It is a place where terroir speaks.

The valley runs roughly north-south, catching consistent sunlight while the deep lake moderates temperature extremes that would otherwise challenge viticulture at this latitude. The result is a growing season long enough for full ripening, but cool enough to preserve the freshness and acidity that give great wine its tension.

Climate

A climate of contrasts

Diurnal Range

Summer days can reach into the 90s, but nights regularly drop into the 50s. This 30-40°F swing preserves acidity while allowing sugars and phenolics to develop fully. The contrast is essential to the balance we seek.

Growing Season

A long, dry growing season—often 180+ days—allows for patient ripening without the pressure of autumn rains. We can wait for the moment of perfect balance, picking on our terms rather than the weather's.

Lake Influence

Lake Chelan is the third-deepest lake in the United States. That massive volume of water stores summer heat and releases it slowly, protecting vines from frost and extending the growing season at both ends.

Precipitation

With only 10-12 inches of annual rainfall, we control water through precision irrigation. This deficit allows us to stress the vines intentionally, concentrating flavors and encouraging deep root development.

Why This Region

Three pillars of place

Glacial Soils

Ancient glaciers carved Lake Chelan and deposited a unique mix of sand, gravel, and mineral-rich loam—soils that drain freely and stress vines gently, encouraging deep roots and concentrated fruit.

Lake Effect

The 55-mile deep lake acts as a thermal mass, moderating temperature extremes. Cool lake breezes in summer preserve acidity; stored warmth in autumn extends ripening and protects against early frost.

Elevation

Situated above the valley floor, our vineyard benefits from increased UV exposure, cooler nights, and exceptional air drainage. The result is fruit with vibrant color, firm structure, and freshness.
